A Fruit is a mature ovary which contain seed or mature ovule .
In previous posts we discussed that ovule contain embryo sac which is the site of fertilisation and zygote and endosperm are formed here only .
Embryo formation occurs when zygote a single celled structure divides mitotically into multicellular mass pre embryo which further divide and differentiate into embryo proper having one or two cotyledon , one plumule or future shoot and one radicle or future root . Endosperm provide nutrition to developing embryo till it is fully established to be supported by cotyledons and then roots .
Signal form mature embryo in seed are sent to ovary which also differentiate into fruit having characteristic color, texture , smell and taste .
Some fruits are formed without fertilisation they are called parthenocarpic fruits . They are seedless fruits . Parthenocarpy may be induced by hormones in plants .
If a fruit is formed from only ovarian part it is called true fruit . Eg. Mango đĨ
If fruit formation involves other parts like thalamus then it is called false fruit đ eg. Strawberry and apple đ.
Multiple fruits are those who develop from a given inflorescence eg..mulberry , pineapple . In a inflorescence many flower or florets are present borne on a stalk called peduncle .
In case of aggregate fruit several free carpel of pistil are involved in fruit formation . So single flower is involved here ..eg. blackberry , raspberry, lemon.
Some technical names have been used for fruits :
1. Pome - apple
2. Berry - grape
3. Drupe - peaches , plum
4. Hesperidium - orange , lemon
5. Pepo- water -melon
