Hydrilla plant comments on its aquatic adaptation

🌱Hydrilla verticillata is a submerged, rooted aquatic plant that can grow in water up to depths of 20 ft.

They have tiny leaves with serrations along their margins.

The leaves are grouped together in a bunch.

They have slender, long and spongy stems that move freely along the water current.

Stomata are absent as no transpiration occurs inside water .

Hydrilla lacks cuticle as they are found inside water  no need to prevent any water - loss.

The plant body produce mucilage to  prevents it from rotting.

Aerenchyma tissue provide buoyancy to plants

Vallisneria Aquatic adaptation

Leaves of vallisneria are thin and long tape-like to sustain plant in water and absorb maximum light .

Their leaves lack stomata.

The hydrophytes have  aerenchyma cells to help in buoyancy.

In Vallisneria, pollination and fertilisation occurs with the help of  water . This is called hydrophilly.

 Rohu fish

Comments on aquatic adaptations

1. Streamline shape to move through water with least resistance

2. Gills covered by operculum for respiration

3 . Different types of fins for swimming

4. Mucus on surface to prevent wetting of skin

Pathology slides

A. Plasmodium

Malaria is caused by four strains of plasmodium viz , vivax , ovale, malariae, falciparum

Infection is via sporozoites stage which inhabit salivary gland of mosquito vector

Sporozoites first infect liver , get differentiated into merozoites which infect blood cells as seen in slide provided

Amoeboid , signet ring stage are seen in blood slide

Parasite live and feed inside RBC .

Ascariasis

It is caused by Ascaris lumbricoides
It affect small intestine of man
It get entry into gut via contaminated food or water
It hatches from egg ingested along with food or water

It feed on intestinal cells causes abdominal pain , vomiting , cramps , leading to loss of blood , blockage of gut .
